My Big Chop: A Bold Birthday Change

In March 2024, I decided to do something bold for my birthday: I did the big chop! After nearly a decade of embracing my voluminous curls, I was ready for a change. My natural hair journey began in 2010, and since 2015, I haven’t used heat on my hair. I loved my big, thick hair, but after almost 10 years, I started to feel bored. I craved something new, something that would make me feel refreshed and light.
So, I took the plunge, visited a stylist, and chopped my hair down to nearly an inch long. The moment those curls hit the floor, I felt an incredible sense of freedom and lightness. My hair was no longer a heavy presence, and I felt like I could float. The best part? Vacations became a breeze! I could swim freely, get my hair wet without a second thought, and just enjoy the water without any restrictions. Afterward, a quick application of my favorite products, and I was good to go. Styling is now quick, easy, and stress-free.

Now, six months post-big chop, my hair is flourishing and growing back so fast. It’s amazing to see how quickly it’s bouncing back. I’ve decided to grow it out again, just to see how fast it will grow this time. However, one thing I’ve learned is that I won’t be coloring it blonde again. While I loved the look, bleaching took a toll on my curl pattern, loosening it and causing dryness. During my TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) stage, I’ve experimented with a subtle semi-permanent copper color that didn’t require lifting my natural color, and I loved the result.
At the moment, I’m rocking knotless boho braids, which have been an amazing protective style. I’ve had them in for a month now, and I’m already seeing new growth. It’s exciting to watch my hair thrive after such a dramatic change.
My TWA Product Recommendations:
OUAI Detox Shampoo: Perfect for occasional deep cleansing without stripping moisture.
Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioning Mask: A must for deep hydration and slip.
OUAI Detangling and Frizz Fighting Leave In Conditioner: Lightweight, detangling, and nourishing.
As I Am Double Butter Cream: Keeps hair moisturized and helps repair split ends.
Camille Rose Curl Maker: Provides the perfect amount of hold without drying out your curls.
Moroccanoil Treatment: Great for breaking the gel cast and adding shine.
All of these products can be found on my LTK.
This journey has been an eye-opener, teaching me to appreciate my hair in every stage. If you’re considering a big chop or are just curious about how it feels, I say go for it! There’s something incredibly empowering about embracing change and starting fresh.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve done a big chop, or if you’re thinking about it. I’d love to hear about your experience!
